Luke Ablett leaves the Swans
Premiership player Luke Ablett has announced today he will leave the Sydney Swans...
Ablett was drafted to the Sydney Swans in the 2000 National Draft with selection #24, made his AFL debut in 2002 and played 133 games for the Club for a career tally of 39 goals. He was part of the 2005 Premiership team, and also played in the losing 2006 Grand Final. He was also a member of the Club’s Leadership Group throughout 2008 and 2009.
Sydney Swans Senior Coach Paul Roos said, “Over the past month we have been having discussions with Luke about a role with the Club that was unlikely to involve him playing senior football next year.
“It’s because we hold Luke in such high esteem that we were looking for a way to keep him involved in the Club as a mentor, role model and leader to our younger players.
“After much thought, Luke felt that he still had something to offer to AFL football and has asked that he not be re-drafted by the Sydney Swans.
“We’re very supportive of Luke’s decision and certainly agree that he does have something to offer AFL football, and wish him luck in Thursday’s draft.”
Roos added, “We sincerely thank Luke for his services to the Club. He has not only been a terrific player but a tremendous person to have around the footy club. He will be forever remembered as a Sydney Swans premiership player of 2005, and someone who got the absolute maximum out of his ability.”
Of his decision, Ablett said, “I have chosen to leave the Sydney Swans because I see limited opportunities for me with the way the Club is heading. They picked up some good players during trade week, and it’s a fresh list heading in a new direction.
“I have been here for nine years and made a lot of great friends. I would hate to have those memories tarnished by the frustration I think I would feel playing in the Reserves when I believe I could still contribute at senior level. I still feel I can play senior football and have a lot to offer to a club, so hopefully I will be given an opportunity elsewhere.”
He has nominated for Thursday’s National Draft.
The Sydney Swans thank Luke for his outstanding contribution to the Club and wish him well in all his future endeavours.
