Patrick Veszpremi has had more than his fair share of injuries over the past two-and-a-half years he’s been at the Swans. Shoulder, groin and finger injuries have resulted in him spending a substantial amount of time on the sidelines since he was drafted by the Swans in 2007.

Following his recovery from a groin injury, which saw him miss a month of the pre-season, Veszpremi is now enjoying spending quality time on the field.

“I feel great, the body has been pulling up really good from games and everything else is going pretty well with my body. So I’m just trying to cash in at the moment because I haven’t had an injury yet (this season) so that’s been great,’’ Veszpremi said.

“This year I’m just happy that I’m injury free and playing footy, it’s pretty good fun,” Veszpremi said.

The 20-year-old has played 10 senior games for the Swans, including four last season. He is aiming to build on this tally in 2010, and has started the season strongly, being named in the Swans Reserves’ best for the past two weeks.

Veszpremi hopes that his current form in Reserves will see him considered for selection as he aims to cement a permanent spot in seniors this season.

“I’ve just got to keep pushing and keep playing really consistent footy with the Reserves, that’s probably my main goal and just keep doing what the coaches ask me to do,” he said.

Veszpremi was instrumental in the Reserves’ win against Ainslie in round three of the AFL Canberra competition, kicking five goals while playing the majority of the game in the forward line.

He moved into more of a defensive role at the end of last season, but enjoyed the chance to play as a forward on Saturday.

“That was the first time I’ve played a whole game pretty much up forward, even towards the end of last year I was down back, so it was pretty good. It was a bit foreign at the start and I had to get used to it all but it was good fun to be down there and to get a few goals again.”

While Veszpremi has enjoyed the chance to play another position, he says that his current preference is playing as a forward.

“I don’t mind kicking a few goals, I like doing that side of things too and I think if there is an opportunity in seniors it will probably be in the forward line,” he said.

The recent success of the seniors means opportunities for the Reserves’ players to force their way into the side have been limited, but Veszpremi is optimistic about his chances.

“It’s pretty competitive, everyone’s training better and everyone’s come back from injury. I think there are only two guys in rehab now so the whole list is going.

“Even on the weekend there were two guys that had to miss Reserves’ footy, so it’s pretty competitive but it’s good though, it makes everyone perform every week.

“I’ve just got to play a bit better in Reserves and put my name up there, so we’ll just see if I can force my way in and just see what happens,” Veszpremi said.

The Reserves will be looking for their fourth consecutive win this weekend when they take on Eastlake.

Eastlake is sitting in fourth place on the AFL Canberra ladder with one win and two losses, but Veszpremi knows from previous encounters that it will be a tough game.

“They are a pretty competitive team; they are usually pretty aggressive at the ball so it should be a pretty good hit out.”

Veszpremi says that one aspect the side will have to improve on is their start to the game. The Reserves trailed by 21-points at half-time against Ainslie last weekend, but came back strongly in the second half to win by 43-points.

“As long as we can really get out of the blocks early,  put some real big scoreboard pressure on and get everyone doing their roles and playing aggressive footy, we’ll win for sure I reckon.

“A lot of the guys are picking up every week and really improving from the week before so that’s one really good positive sign,” he said.

The Swans Reserves will play Eastlake at 3.50pm in the curtain-raiser to the Sydney Swans v Brisbane Lions match on Saturday at the SCG.
