Sydney Swans category B rookies Barry O’Connor and Sam Wicks will have the opportunity to put their hand up for selection, after being elevated to Sydney’s senior list.
It comes after Isaac Heeney and Sam Naismith were placed on the club’s long-term injury list.
Heeney will miss the rest of the season as he recovers from ankle surgery, which was needed to repair a tendon injured in Round 6 against Richmond.
Naismith is on the road to recovery from knee surgery following a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in Round 4 against the Western Bulldogs.
Executive GM of Football Charlie Gardiner said it presents a great opportunity for the pair.
“While the significant injuries to Isaac and Sam Naismith are unfortunate, placing them on our long-term injury list means that Barry and Sam have an opportunity to press for senior selection,” Gardiner said.
“Barry joined the club from Ireland last year and has impressed with the way he has adapted to the game.
“It’s been a whirlwind first year for Barry, arriving to the bushfires and then having the season postponed. But through all of that he’s shown great resilience and has worked hard on his skills and the technical aspects of the game.
“Sam came to the club via the QBE Sydney Swans Academy and we’ve seen him continue to improve his game since arriving at the club at the end of 2018.
“We look forward to watching both players continue to their development.”
