The Sydney Swans have unveiled a special 1918 Commemorative Guernsey to celebrate South Melbourne’s second premiership, a thrilling five-point win over Collingwood.
The Swans will run out in the jumper when they take on the Magpies in Round 20 at the SCG, to mark 100 years since the historic win.
After trailing at every change, South Melbourne snatched a magnificent victory when forward Chris Laird booted the final goal of the game to see the Swans win 9.8 (62) to 7.15 (57) in front of a crowd of 39,262 at the MCG.
It was September 7, 1918 and on the same day Swans Team of the Century backman Vic Belcher became the first ever player to notch up 200 games for the red and white.
The 1918 Commemorative Guernsey features South Melbourne’s iconic red sash and collar.
Names of the 18 premiership players are featured throughout the design, while the details of the match and the original South Melbourne logo can also be found on the jumper.
Sydney Swans Chief Executive and Managing Director Andrew Ireland said he’s looking forward to seeing the team run out in the unique jumper.
“Our club has a rich history and the commemorative guernsey is a fitting way to celebrate the Swans’ historic 1918 premiership victory – it’s the players who will shape our future giving a nod of respect to our players of the past,” Ireland said.
“There’s a long history between the Swans and Collingwood and we’re looking forward to another blockbuster Saturday night match when we take on the Pies at the SCG in Round 20 for this special occasion.”
Sydney will host Collingwood on Saturday, August 4 at 7:20pm at the SCG.
