After 14 seasons at the Sydney Swans, John Blakey is departing the club.
Blakey is returning to Melbourne, having accepted a position with the Kangaroos, where he played 224 of his 359 AFL games.
During his time with the Swans, Blakey has served as both a forward and defensive line coach, as well as a three-year stint as the Head of Development, helping guide the club’s emerging talent.
Sydney Swans senior coach John Longmire said Blakey will be missed.
“After giving 14 years of service to the club, we understand John’s desire the be closer to family,” Longmire said.
“John has been a wonderful contributor to our club, both on and off the field. His work ethic, team-first attitude, and ability to foster strong relationships have made him highly regarded and respected by everyone at the club.
“A Life Member of the Sydney Swans, John’s knowledge, experience and tactical nous has enabled him to get the best out of players.
“I’d personally like to thank John for his invaluable support over such a long time. Senior coaching throws up a number of challenges on a daily basis and John has provided a consistent sounding board throughout his time at the club.
“John and Kelly will be missed and we wish them all the best for the future. We know he will continue to follow the Swans – and Nick – with interest.”
