Young midfielders Oliver Florent and Isaac Heeney are on track to be available for selection for the Sydney Swans’ season-opening clash with the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
Florent injured his foot in Sydney’s JLT Community Series fixture against GWS, which was followed by Heeney’s ankle sprain in the Swans’ final pre-season match against the Gold Coast Suns.
But Swans Head of Football Charlie Gardiner said the two young stars were in the frame to face the Dogs in Melbourne on Saturday.
“Oliver has made a full recovery and has participated in the last two training sessions,” Gardiner said.
“Subject to him getting through Thursday’s main training session, I expect he’ll be fit and available for selection.
“Isaac has had a light load for the last week but participated in skills today. Like Oliver, subject to getting through Thursday’s main session, I expect him to be fit and available for Saturday night’s game.”
Sydney veteran Kieren Jack (knee) is likely to feature in either the AFL clash or the NEAFL side’s practice match against the Canberra Demons in Sutherland on Saturday.
Gardiner said the 31-year-old was set for a return to action after solid recent progress in his recovery.
“Kieren had a modified training load during the pre-season to manage a knee injury,” Gardiner said.
“He had surgery in the off-season and was limited in the training he was able to do during the pre-season program, but he’s been in full training for the past month to five weeks. He’s come a long way and to the point that he’ll get some game time this weekend. Whether that’s at senior or reserves level is yet to be determined, but he’s fit and ready to go.”
Lance Franklin trained with the playing group at the SCG on Tuesday and remains a chance to take on the Dogs.
“Lance is a chance to play but the team hasn’t been selected,” Gardiner said.
“The medical team and coaching staff are working through that conundrum.”
