Hybrid-LARS for Johnson
Sydney Swans defender Alex Johnson underwent a second knee reconstruction earlier this week
The 21-year-old, who suffered a setback last month when it was revealed the graft from his first reconstruction did not take, underwent hybrid-LARS surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament on Monday morning.
Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron confirmed that the young defender’s second surgery was a success.
“He had what is called a hybrid-LARS technique, so he’s had a LARS as well as a hamstring graft put alongside the graft he already has in there,” Cameron told SwansTV.
“He’s got a fairly solid cruciate reconstruction and we’re hoping to have a really good run from here.”
Cameron said Johnson would now follow the standard rehabilitation procedure, which should see the number 34 ready to return at the beginning of the 2014 season.
“He’s really going to follow a typical LARS program and that will take us into the off-season,” he said.
“We’ll have longer before training will start, so he’s going to be ready we expect by round one.”
In other injury news, Cameron said Adam Goodes, Lewis Jetta, Sam Reid and Lewis Roberts-Thomson were all making progress since beginning outdoor running programs last week.
Cameron said Reid and Jetta were leading the way in the Swans’ rehab group and were increasing speed at training this week.
“All four of those guys are running and they’re already racing each other to see who can be first back,” he said.
“They are really starting to kick along now.
“Jetta and Reid are running quite quickly at the moment, and Goodes and LRT are running at a Fartlek speed, which is a jogging and fast running combination.
“They are certainly up and going and we’re going to have them close to training next week.”
Swans forward Mitch Morton will miss another week of football with a knee injury suffered in the Swans reserves loss to the Brisbane Lions reserves at the beginning of August.
“His knee is settling down, he’s got a bit of damage to his cartilage in his knee,” Cameron said.
“We’re hoping to start him running at the end of this week and then also start training next week.”
Cameron also confirmed that Dan Hannebery, who suffered a heavy knock to the nose in Saturday night’s clash with Collingwood, would be available for selection this week.
