The Sydney Swans will need to make at least one change for Friday night's clash with Carlton at Marvel Stadium after the AFL Tribunal upheld James Rowbottom's one match suspension.

Rowbottom was charged with engaging in rough conduct against Essendon's Zach Merrett during the second quarter of the Round 9 match at the SCG on Saturday.

The incident was assessed as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, attracting a one match sanction for a first offence.
