Star Sydney Swans defender Aliir Aliir visited Marrickville Intensive English School earlier this month to share his inspirational story to a host of newly arrived migrants and refugees.
The school in Sydney’s inner west offers intensive English tuition to high-school students whose first language is not English, while it also provides programs to help them adjust to Australian society.
Aliir, born in a Kenyan refugee camp to Sudanese parents, addressed the students, answered their questions and ran them through skills and games.
The 45-match Swan was thrilled to pass on his story to Australia’s latest generation of multicultural Australians.
“Given my background from a refugee camp and coming to Australia not knowing much English, I think these kids can relate to me,” Aliir told SwansTV.
“It was good to be able to come down here, chat to them and share my story about how I got to the Swans.”
