Lucy McEvoy is set to make the big the move to Sydney in the upcoming months after signing with the Swans in a long-term deal. Hailing from Geelong and playing 33 games for Carlton, it seems the 21-year-old has always been at home wherever football takes her.
“Back when I nominated for the draft, I could nominate for Geelong but chose Melbourne, so I’ve never been homesick,” McEvoy said on her latest trip to the harbour city.
“I’m very independent, and I like to do things on my own and challenge myself.
“After chatting with the Sydney Swans, it was clear this was the perfect opportunity to do that - the nice weather is also pretty enticing to be honest.
“The Club - through conversations I’ve had and the people I’ve met already - is really appealing to me.”
Despite moving over 800 kilometres to pursue the new opportunity, there are plenty of familiarities in the red and white. As well as joining former teammates, the defender reunites with ALFW senior coach, Scott Gowans.
McEvoy first started playing Auskick with her twin brother at age five and played junior football with a line-up of boys until 14. “I loved it,” she recalled, “they treated me like one of them”.
She continued playing in the open-age competition and played with the Geelong Falcons for four years. McEvoy was also chosen for the national championships playing for Victoria Country under Gowans.
“He was very good at just letting me go and play footy. He gave me a role in defence and taught me to not over complicate it.
“It was a good balance between being really caring and pushing you to be better… he is no different to when I was 14.”
McEvoy made her ALFW debut in 2020 after being picked up in the 2019 AFL Draft.
Swans fans can expect some exciting things from the youngster given her experience across all three lines. These days she has settled into a more defensive role. “It’s quite a strength of mine to be able to swap roles”.
McEvoy joins a roster of new signees including Chloe Molloy, Laura Gardiner, and Irish trio, Paris McCarthy, Jennifer Higgins and Julie O’Sullivan. This week it was also confirmed that star players Montana Ham, Cynthia Hamilton, and Sofia Hurley have re-signed on long-term deals.
