The Sydney Swans VFL side went down to Williamstown by 33-points in a low-scoring affair at Lakeside Oval in Round 8 of the competition.

The Swans, searching for their first win of the season and faced with challenges of depth created by AFL injuries, were in the thick of the contest for two and a half quarters because the game blew open with three goals in five minutes late in the third term, before repeating the dose in the last, as the Seagulls secured their third spot on the ladder.

Despite trailing for the entire game, the contest was hard fought from both teams, but the Swans constant challenge of taking the opportunities with points on the scoreboard continued.

Angus Sheldrick was a standout and continues to press for senior selection, with the 19-year-old finishing with 36 disposals, had nine clearances and six marks to go with his goal - one of just four for Sydney - in an impressive performance.

Young midfielder Dylan Stephens was busy with 26 disposals and four clearances, while Lachlan McAndrew was dominant in the ruck and finished with 35 hitouts.

Sam Wicks (six tackles, one goal), Lewis Melican (18 disposals, six marks) and Corey Warner (17 disposals, four clearances) also put in strong performances in the loss.

The Swans remain winless after six games and will face Port Melbourne next week.

SYDNEY SWANS 1.2, 2.3, 3.5, 4.10 (34)
WILLIAMSTOWN 2.3, 3.5, 6.11, 9.13 (67)
