For Dr Li Wang, it was love at first sight for the AFL.
Hailing from Northern China, Dr Wang arrived in Melbourne in 2019 from generations of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. Despite limited English and in a foreign country, she found an unlikely home with the Sydney Swans.
With the assistance of a translator – close friend Wei Feng Bird – Dr Wang recalled her admiration for the sport to Sydney Swans Media.
“The first time I attended a game I just loved the players dedication and how they’re immersed in the game,” she said.
“It had a really deep impression on me and every time they kicked a goal, I shared their excitement.”
It was Ross Bird – Wei’s husband and fellow fan – who introduced Dr Wang to the Sydney Swans and now they attend Melbourne-based matches whenever possible. Including last year’s Grand Final.
According to Wei her friend attended the Grand Final with limited English and found a way to communicate with the fellow red and white fans sitting around her.
Recalling the game this week Dr Wang was impressed by the boy’s tenacity.
“The players didn’t give up and they persevered to the end.”
Despite watching from Melbourne Dr Wang is excited for the Swans’ Round 15 home game which will celebrate the Chinese Australian community and their contribution to the AFL.
Dr Wang is growing interest for the AFL abroad and often sends photos and videos to family at home. Soccer is increasingly popular in China, according to Dr Wang, however she believes Aussie Rules Football could have a place in different countries and culture.
She concluded, “It’s really interesting to see the players’ spirit and power and sport is a good way to bring people of different cultural backgrounds together.”
