Pressure acts drive Swans
Ben McGlynn and Dane Rampe point to an improved defensive game as the reason behind today's form turnaround
Shaw’s tackle late in the final term was one of 102 tackles laid by the Swans for the match, which was a big increase on the 77 laid against North Melbourne in round four.
Speaking to SwansTV after the match, McGlynn said Shaw’s effort was just an example of the desire the Swans showed to secure their second win for the season.
“I think the boys put in a good four-quarter effort tonight and the hit around the footy was superb,” he said.
“It’s been lacking in the last month and I thought everyone stood up tonight and it was great to see blokes flying in and getting their hands dirty against a good-quality opposition
“Shawy, with his last effort late in the quarter when he came forward and laid a tackle was terrific.
“For 30 minutes in every quarter the boys just fought down to the last minute of each quarter and that effort by Shawy just typified the way the boys went about it all game.”
McGlynn, who was appointed to the club’s leadership group this year, led from the front in terms of pressure acts, finishing the match with 24 touches, two goals, and a game-high 12 tackles.
The midfielder, who spoke to the media in the lead up to the match about the Swans’ need to take pride in their performance, said he was pleased with his efforts in Saturday night’s match.
“I spoke during the week about how we needed to lift and start taking some pride in the jumper and play for each other,” he said.
“I had to live up to my word and I just went out there and tried to play my role and get the pressure up and get the boys going.
“I feel that if I’m applying pressure and using my energy around the footy then a lot of guys jump on board.”
The Swans had strong contributions across the board in Saturday night’s match, with eight players finishing the match with over 20 possessions.
Defender Dane Rampe was one of those players, who put in his best performance for the season with 22 touches, including four rebound 50s and a game-high eight one-per-centers.
Speaking from the change rooms after the match, the 23-year-old said the win was the club’s best team effort for the year.
“It was absolutely outstanding especially against a top-quality opposition in Freo, it doesn’t get much better than that,” he said.
“We were just united and I think that was a big focus coming out of last week’s game where we weren’t working for each other and doing those little things that we really pride ourselves on.

“We got back to that during the week and there were some hard truths spoken and we were just a united bunch out there and that’s why it felt so good and why we played so well.
“Just speaking quickly to the boys after the game, that’s what we should be dishing up every week and the challenge will be to keep putting it out there week in, week out, so we’re really looking forward to this next part of our season.”
Rampe said while his performance gave him great confidence this week, he said still could not afford to get too comfortable with his place in the side.
“I felt pretty good, but I’m not comfortable, but I’m more confident,” he said.
“You never can feel comfortable with the quality and depth we’ve got on the list, and it’s good that we’re on our toes.
“Early on, I was probably playing on some taller opponents and I felt I was able to beat them on the ground, so I got a few touches there.
“I thought I defended pretty well, so that’s the foundation of my game and as long as I’m doing that then I’m contributing to the team.”
