A dominant performance from forward-turned-midfielder Jordan Dawson has spearheaded a 121-point win for the Sydney Swans in Saturday’s Round 7 clash against Canberra.
Dawson collected the ball at will and did his fair share of grunt work as well to amass a game-high 38 disposals and 14 clearances in the 25.15 (165) to 6.8 (44) smashing at Manuka Oval, earning the Swans their sixth win of the season.
The 20-year-old, who has played the one AFL game, against Collingwood in Round 3, also applied some scoreboard pressure kicking 2.2 to add his name to a scoresheet featuring 12 teammates.
NEAFL coach Rhyce Shaw put the onus on him to take the game by the scruff of the neck, and Dawson responded.
“He was outstanding,” Shaw said.
“We put it to him before the game, to start stamping his authority on games, because we all know he can, and he did exactly that.
“He's what we call a ‘hybrid’ mid as he's quite tall but can run with the best of them. To have that many touches and clearances, throw eight tackles in there and a couple of goals, it was a really impressive performance.
“If he can continue that for us in the coming weeks, expect him to come back into senior calculations pretty quickly.”
Dawson was one of 11 Swans with AFL experience who made the trip to the nation’s capital, two of which were Kurt Tippett and Gary Rohan.
The duo, back from injuries, were strong contributors with Tippett collecting 22 disposals, six marks, 34 hit outs and four goals in his traditional role as a ruck-forward while Rohan finished with 19 touches and four goals up forward.
Dan Robinson also made a strong comeback in his first game since dislocating his shoulder in the AFL back in Round 1, picking up 26 disposals and three goals.
Brandon Jack (24 disposals, one goal), Aliir Aliir (21 disposals, eight marks) and Michael Talia (15 disposals, six marks, one goal) also impressed the coach in what was a strong three-quarter display.
"Canberra are pretty good inside and really tested us in that area of the ground, especially in the second quarter," Shaw added.
"They got on top but the way we responded after half-time was really pleasing. We got the game back on our terms and really ran away with it."
The NEAFL Swans retained second spot on the ladder after the undefeated Sydney Uni made light work of Southport on Saturday.
It is Sydney Uni which awaits Shaw and his playing group in what is a highly anticipated Round 8 encounter at Henson Park next Friday night.
