New recruit Jack Maibaum has described the sense of relief when his name was called out by the Sydney Swans at pick 45 in the National Draft.
Maibaum was named full back in the U18 All Australian team following his standout carnival for Vic Metro in 2016.
Adding depth to the key position stocks was one of the key objectives for the Swans during the recent draft period.
While it was a nervous draft night for Maibaum he could not be happier with where he has ended up.
“It was crazy at my house,” Maibaum said.
“I was in a room with my family and friends then when I heard my name called out everybody just converged onto me.
“It was nerve racking but a really awesome feeling.”
The key defender is one of nine new players to start their AFL careers with Sydney this week following the national and rookie draft.
“The first few days have been crazy, I have met heaps of people and I have been trying to find my way around the facilities,” he said.
“It has been really good so far.”
The first week for most of the new recruits has involved an introduction to the staff and systems of the Sydney Swans.
“It sucks sitting on the side and watching them train as you would much rather be out there with them,” he said.
“It is all part of the process as we just learn how everything works and then we will be into it in no time.”
