Round 18 v Gold Coast

A 72-point round 18 win over the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium saw the Swans move a game clear at the top of the AFL ladder.

However, it wasn’t all positive news for the Swans, with centre-half forward Sam Reid leaving the ground in the first quarter with a knee injury, which was later revealed as a partial medial tear.

With Reid off the ground, the Suns outscored the Swans three goals to two in the second term, and the margin was just 23 points at the long break.

The Swans returned to the field in the second half with vigour and piled on five goals in nine minutes in the third term to set up a 59-point lead with a quarter remaining.

The Swans midfield, led by Ryan O’Keefe (36 possessions), Josh Kennedy (33) and Kieren Jack (29), were dominant while Adam Goodes, Lewis Roberts-Thomson and Jude Bolton notched up 10 goals between them.

Swans ruckman Mike Pyke was also a standout in Shane Mumford’s absence, with 47-hitouts and nine possessions for the match.
