Two tests as Tippett steps up training
Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Gary Rohan face fitness tests later in the week, as Kurt Tippett takes a step forward
Rohan, who was subbed out of last Saturday night’s loss to Collingwood with ‘nervy’ leg pain in the leg he fractured in early 2012, completed off-legs drills with the rehab group during Tuesday’s session at Lakeside Oval, but is expected to join the main session on Thursday.
In this week’s HCF Injury Update, Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said the club would need to assess Rohan’s condition when he returns to the track later this week.
“Gary’s had a couple of issues that sort of came on as the game wore on,” Cameron told SwansTV.
“Indirectly related to his broken leg, he sometimes gets some soreness in his leg and some nervy pain coming from his back.
“These things combined to mean that we subbed him out.
“He was a bit sore after the game so we’ll just have to see how the week pans out for him.”
Roberts-Thomson, who missed last weekend’s game after jarring his groin in the Swans’ first round match, took part in the majority of the main session on Tuesday afternoon including a number of contested drills.
Cameron said he was hopeful that Roberts-Thomson would be in the mix to play against the Crows this weekend.
“(Roberts-Thomson) jarred his groin/pelvis area in the previous game and he wasn’t quite right prior to last week,” Cameron said.
“He’s up and running now and he’s due to start training with the team (on Tuesday) and if he gets through that and on Thursday then he’s a chance of playing.”
In positive news, Kurt Tippett completed his first skills-based session at Lakeside Oval on Tuesday afternoon, with the key forward taking part in kicking and marking drills.
Tippett led at pace and took a number of strong overhead marks during the session, working closely with forwards coach Henry Playfair and skills coach Nick Davis.
Cameron said Tippett, along with Tommy Walsh, would join the Swans reserves training session in Sydney on Friday morning.
“Kurt will be training with the (reserves) team on Friday … and we’re happy with the way he’s going,” he said.
“He’s feeling good and we’ll be putting him into team training next week as well.
“Walshy’s had a long lay-off and certainly done a lot of running and is looking very fit now.
“He’ll also start his skill work on Friday.”
Adam Goodes was also out at Lakeside Oval and completed some light skills work with the rehab group.
“(Goodes) is only a week behind (Tippett and Walsh),” Cameron said.
“He’s got some more running to do this week at a higher intensity and he’ll start skills at the end of next week.”
