North win to rejuvenate Swans
Patrick Veszpremi says discipline and better ball use were the keys to his side's win against North Melbourne on Sunday
The Swans prevailed in a tough struggle against North and the 20-year-old provided one of the game’s highlights with an exuberant celebration after snapping a spectacular goal from the boundary line in the third quarter.
“You don’t play to lose, so to win today, I think all the boys will get the excitement back into their game,” he said.
“Words can’t describe, really, how good a win is.”
Veszpremi said his leap for joy in front of the Swans’ faithful was a mixture of delight and surprise after his first goal of an injury-plagued season.
“I practise those at training all the time but I always miss them. To kick it, I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
“I get a bit excited when I kick a goal but it’s not really like an arrogant thing – I just couldn’t believe I kicked it, actually. I was a bit surprised,
“The coaches know I get a bit excited but as long as I’m playing my role and doing it for the team, I can’t see any harm in it.”
North Melbourne wasted several chances to apply scoreboard pressure in the first half and Veszpremi said the Swans’ superior ball use was a key to their victory.
The playing group had also been working to improve their discipline, he said, and although their display against North wasn’t perfect, it was a great improvement.
“We have lost four games but the effort has been there. It’s just been some of our errors and undisciplined acts with free kicks that have let us down,” Veszpremi said.
“There were a few big ones in there today that they did score goals from but they weren’t there as much.
“We seemed to use the ball a bit better and we had a more open forward line which was good. The backmen ran off and everyone played their role today. Once everyone plays their role, we’re such a better team.”
Having missed three months with a ruptured finger tendon, Veszpremi said he was looking forward to improving his fitness during the rest of the season.
“The coaches are using me on and off the bench because that’s what my body’s letting me do,” he said.
“Last week was a bit disappointing for me so I wanted to make a real impact this week and try to work really hard. I thought I did that today and it showed a bit more but I still need to keep working really hard.
“I’ve still got a long way to go. I don’t think I’ve come near my full potential and I don’t think most of us have.”
