After five consecutive wins including a top of the table scalp, Swans reserves coach Jared Crouch couldn’t be happier with his side’s form.

Before last weekend’s bye, the Swans reserves defeated Queanbeyan by 41 points and claimed top spot on the NEAFL Eastern Conference table.

But it’s not just the reserves win/loss ratio that Crouch has been impressed with.

“I’m pleased with the way the boys are playing,” Crouch said.

“They are certainly playing a style of football that John Longmire wants them to play so if anything does happen through injuries or suspension that players are available to be selected.

“What we’re after is that good opposition each week to really test our guys and see where they are, and continue to improve their fitness and make sure the hardness of the game replicates senior football as best as it can.”

At the midway point of the season, Crouch said he has also been really happy with the numerous players who have made their mark in the senior side after showing good form in the reserves.

The coach said he expects more reserves players will be pushing to play senior football in the second half of the season.

“The pleasing thing is a lot of our good players are playing well,” he said.

“Tommy Walsh played a bit of reserves then played two solid games in the seniors, Trent Dennis-Lane has had three or four weeks where he’s been going OK, Tony Armstrong is another one who has just cracked it into the senior side, so when you think of those guys they’re going OK.

“Mike Pyke started in the reserves and has now come into the seniors, Matt Spangher is coming back from injury and is starting to play more and more game time and will hopefully be an important player in the senior side in the back half of the season.”

Another player in the reserves side who is in contention for a senior Swans debut is Mitch Morton, who is leading the Eastern Conference goal kicking with 47 at the halfway point of the season.

Crouch said while Morton’s goal kicking is not in question, the forward still has some areas of his game to improve before he makes the transition to senior football this season.

“Mitch is certainly kicking a lot of goals, but if we look back to last year in the reserves, Trent Dennis-Lane kicked a lot of goals as well and it was certainly difficult for him to get in the seniors,” Crouch said.

“When it comes to goal-kicking, we certainly have no questions on Mitch. He just has to continue to work on the pressure aspects of his game.

“He is also dealing with a Swans senior forward line that is functioning pretty well at the moment. If you think of Sam Reid, Lewis Roberts-Thomson up forward, Adam Goodes coming back this week and Trent Dennis-Lane who has had his opportunity at senior level, they’re the type of guys that Mitch is fighting with for a place.”

Crouch also noted the performances of senior players Mark Seaby and Jarred Moore as well as the progression of some of the club’s up and coming talent.

“Others like Mark Seaby has been dominating the ruck for us and also Jarred Moore who is just an outstanding leader and continues to play great footy at NEAFL level and … is a real help to me in the reserves at the moment and hopefully he also gets an opportunity in the seniors at some stage,” he said.

“There are also the young guys like Tommy Mitchell getting some game time, Alex Brown, who has now played two games, so there are a lot of pleasing signs across the board and the younger players are developing and the older players are in good form.”

“There are certainly not a lot of players who I can say are way out of form or a long way away, they’re all showing signs of improvement or are not far away.”

The Sydney Swans reserves will take on Sydney Uni at the SCG tomorrow at 4:10pm.
