Sydney Swans reserves coach Henry Playfair says he will be ‘right on top’ of his players this week to make sure they remain focused during the upcoming bye weekend.

With 10 of the 14 AFL sides suffering defeat the weekend after coming off the bye, Playfair stressed the importance of keeping his team conditioned and hungry before they play again on May 28.

“It’s really important to stay focused on practicing AFL-standards,” Playfair told sydneyswans.com.au.

“They’ll train with the senior group this week, and then on Sunday we’ll have a pretty solid hit-out and keep up the conditioning of the guys.”

The Swans reserves remain undefeated and atop the NEAFL Eastern Conference ladder after they dismantled the Gold Coast Suns reserves by 92 points on Saturday afternoon.

Playfair was pleased by the four quarter effort shown by his team as they led from start-to-finish against the Suns, particularly the output of Trent Dennis-Lane who finished with seven goals in a much improved performance.

“He had six tackles as well, which we were probably most pleased with,” Playfair said about his small forward.

“Some of his forward pressure stuff was a lot better than what we’ve seen in the previous weeks, and that’s what we’ve spoken to him about in terms of getting back into form.”

The midfield coped well without the services of Nathan Gordon and Luke Parker who were promoted to senior duty, with Jarred Moore and Brett Meredith dominant through the middle of the park.

“Both those boys had a lot more time on ball than probably previously,” Playfair said.

“Jarred Moore played on ball and rested forward, and also Paul Bevan went through there, so we were pretty happy with those blokes ability to run out the game and certainly put pressure on the opposition.”

With Gold Coast’s Charlie Dixon having an impact on the game in the first half, Playfair decided to move Jesse White on to the big Suns target man, which freed-up Lewis Johnston to move forward - a move that paid off for both parties.

“It was just good to see Lewis given a crack up forward, and he did pretty well,” Playfair said. “(He) kicked three goals in the second half and looked pretty damaging.

“For Jesse as well, (to) get him involved down back in a bit of a different role playing on the bigger body in Charlie Dixon, he did a pretty good job after halftime.”

The Swans reserves next outing will be against Ainslie in round nine of the NEAFL competition at Newcastle’s No. 1 Sportsground (corner of Union and Parry St) from 12.30pm, Saturday May 28.
